The Azadi Stadium, officially named the Azadi Stadium, has been constructed as the first ever all-seater professional football stadium in Tehran, Iran. The stadium is built by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; an American engineering, urban planning, and architectural firm. It is also called the Azadi Stadium because it shares a name with the famous street in central Tehran, the Azadi Avenue.
Before its opening in October 2021, the stadium was to be shared by two other venues. However, this was not the case, because the Iranian authorities opted to develop the stadium and make it available to domestic and foreign visitors. The Azadi Stadium has undergone extensive renovation since its completion, with the main stadium areas receiving a coat of white paint. The seats in the stadium were then repainted in white and blue; but the original designs have remained intact. The stadium is now divided into two main sections: the Azadi Stadium that hosts domestic matches and the Azadi Stadium that hosts international matches. There are also smaller sports facilities at the venue.
The Azadi Stadium is one of the largest stadiums in the Middle East. It can hold more than eighty thousand spectators. During matches, the stadium is known to create a deafening roar that even the players inside the stands cannot hear; due to its huge size and external construction. The pitch of the stadium is also very large; about twenty-five meters wide and thirty-six meters long. The playing surface is also highly irregular and there are steps and boarding for safety purposes at the edge of the pitch.
Although the stadium is designed for football, it is also used for volleyball, tennis and baseball; although only just twenty percent of the entire ground space is used for these sports. The stadium has also held softball and baseball matches, although they were held on alternate days of the week. There are also bleachers along the walkways leading into the Azadi Stadium; although the seating areas are limited.
The ground of the Azadi Stadium is made from a mixture of concrete and soil. The fabric used for the seats is also hard-wearing, making it ideal for rainy seasons. There is also a cover over the seating during the summer months. The drainage system uses channels to drain water away from the stadium.
Azadi Stadium is being constructed by Turkish companies. All the construction work is being carried out by these contractors, who have previously worked on a project for the Turkish Football Team. The overall cost of the project is estimated at around three hundred and forty million Euros. Some of the infrastructure features that will be included in the overall project are an artificial grass field; a sixty-yard wide running track and a turf area with a pitch. Other features that are also being added are lighting, a digital ticketing system, concession stands, seats for the public and a roofed control center. There is also a video screen television station and a press box.
The Azadi Stadium will host matches for clubs from Turkey, Greece, Germany, Brazil and the United States. This is not the only soccer facility in Turkey however; Fethiyeye University has a football field that is also used by local football teams. The university is trying to attract more students by improving its facilities. There are plans to build a hotel on the grounds of the stadium and a restaurant as well. Other sports programs are also in the works.
This venue is being built to cater to the needs of both domestic as well as international football matches. There are already some teams that have been playing games at the Azadi Stadium and it is proving to be a success so far. It is also hoped that the stadium will become a venue that will attract tourists. In order to enhance the stadium further, there are also plans to build a golf course on the site.
